Philipp Bautz is particularly interested in two topics. The first is the environment. That is why he researches how people live together with their environment. The second focus is democracy, anti-Semitism and anti-racism. He is involved in Social Science Works to strengthen democratic values through political education.
He is a PhD student at the GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences in the field of sociohydrology. His research deals with the modeling of social adaptation mechanisms in the wake of flood experiences. To this end, he analyzes survey data collected after floods using Bayesian methods.
He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology from the University of Potsdam. He then successfully completed the Master’s program in Statistics at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In the winter semester 2020/21, he also studied at the University of Toulouse for one semester. His specializations during his studies were environmental economics, quantitative research, survey analysis and non-parametric models.
He works for Social Science Works on civic education projects. He uses the deliberation method – an open, respectful and goal-oriented exchange among peers. With this approach, he tries to encourage participants to stand up for their convictions more confidently. This is why working with children and young people is particularly valuable to him.
Philipp is extremely lucky to live in Potsdam (note of the editor: Philipp is a bit chauvinistic here). When he is not at one of the many beautiful lakes, he can be found either in the kitchen or with a paintbrush in his hand.
